Given that we have two ears and only one mouth, you’d think we’d listen more than we speak. But that’s not what happens. Most of us are so keen to make ourselves heard that we forget that effective communication needs a speaker–and a listener.
By paying close attention and quietly processing the information when someone is speaking, you can not only boost your own knowledge, but also make the other person feel heard, and respected. That goes a long way in gaining their trust and building a long-term relationship.
Show your co-workers that their opinion matters by listening to them without judgment, bias or interruptions. And remember, an interested person is an interesting person.
Thrive Skills are an essential set of cognitive, social and behavioral skills to enable our learners to continuously succeed, at every stage of their career.
Listening is one of the most important skills you can have. How well you listen has a major impact on your job effectiveness, and on the quality of your relationships with others. Active Listening or attentive listening is where you make a conscious effort to hear not only the words that another person is saying but, more importantly, the complete message being communicated.
Active Listening or attentive listening builds strong relationships and, while it may not come naturally to many of us, it’s an invaluable communication skill. Strong and effective communication skills are essential in a field where emotions often reach critical mass.
Attentive listening or Active Listening can be mastered through several techniques, some of which are to pay attention, listen with an open mind and respond appropriately. With the right tools and frameworks, attentive listening can turn into a skill that will help you thrive.
